Store Your Guns Safely

Gun safety is incredibly important and not something that should be taken lightly. One aspect of firearm safety is proper storage. Today, we are going to take a look at what to keep in mind when storing firearms in your home.

Remember Your Children

If you have children in the house, ensure you take the appropriate measures to keep firearms hidden and locked away from them. According to The Washington Post, more than 20% of parents incorrectly believed that their children had never handled their guns. Kids know more than we think, which is why you must not assume. You may think you can get away with hiding firearms under the bed or in unlocked drawers, but this would be negligent. Do not neglect to lock up your firearms and keep the key with you. You must also always store your guns unloaded.

Remember to make sure there are no bullets in a semi-automatic handgun when you remove the magazine. Beyond that, do not store your ammunition with your firearms; instead, lock it away in a separate safe. This will reduce the risk of your child loading your firearms if they find them. These precautions will help protect your children and yourself from any horrific accidents.

Gun Safes

While locking your firearms away may seem like a barrier to your easy access, this is not the case. Storage options allow the gun owner to get to their gun quickly and easily while keeping it shielded from others. For example, a wristband or key fob can operate many safe options. Keeping your gun locked away decreases the chance of someone stealing it. Did you know that an estimated 200,000 to 500,000 guns are stolen each year? This means that a potentially dangerous person could gain illegal access to your firearms, which is not something that we want. As a gun owner, it is your responsibility to take care of your firearms and ensure they don't get into the wrong hands.

Firearms can be a great way to improve your security and peace of mind, but when not properly stored or handled, they can create more problems. It is required by law in Colorado to store guns securely and out of reach of minors and unauthorized users, and unlawful storage can result in 120 days in jail and/or up to $750 in fines. So remember to do your part!

Gun ownership is a responsibility. If you own firearms or are interested in becoming a firearm owner, educate yourself on proper storage and safety measures such as these.
