Police believe the incident is related to the popular Popeyes chicken sandwich.

A 28-year-old man is dead after a fight at a Maryland Popeyes. Around 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, police responded to a call at a Popeyes in Oxon Hill. Police found a man in the parking lot suffering from stab wounds. They administered medical attention, and the man was taken to the hospital where he later died. The name of the victim has not been released.

Homicide detectives working on the case have determined the two men got into an altercation while in line, and the fight extended out into the parking lot. One man stabbed the other and then fled the scene. Investigators believe both of the men were waiting in a line specifically for the new chicken sandwich, and the incident happened after one person cut in front of the other.

“For you to get that angry over anything, for that type of anger to develop into this type of violence, is a very sad and tragic day,” said Jennifer Donelan, Director of Media Relations for Prince George’s County Police. “That person needs to turn themselves in.”

Police are asking anyone who was in the restaurant at the time to contact the Prince George’s County Police Department. NBC News reached out to Popeyes Restaurants and got this statement:

“We do not yet know whether this was the result of a dispute over one of our products or something unrelated, but there is no reason for someone to lose their life on a Monday night in a parking lot. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends and we are fully cooperating with local authorities.”

The restaurant chain initially offered the chicken sandwich as a limited-edition menu item in August. Sales of the sandwich exceeded expectations, and so Popeyes relaunched the chicken sandwich in its stores this past Sunday, November 3.
