Between airline cancellations, restricted train travel, and social distancing in general, lots of our travel plans got, shall we say, sidetracked, in 2020. According to a survey by Car and Driver, people still may not feel comfortable flying on planes and being around lots of people even after pandemic problems subside. Many have said they plan to take more long-distance road trips.
The spontaneous adventure of the open road is a good way to get away from the stress-related issues of a pandemic. And add to that the exercise value of hiking, bicycling, and checking out the wildlife at your favorite state and national parks.
Parking the RV or pitching a tent is another experience that has become increasingly popular. You can also enjoy the retro charm of a historic highway motor court. Of course, it’s also completely fine to just enjoy the curves and landscape of the nation’s roads and historic byways like Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway, the Lincoln Highway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or the Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys.

Whether you’re driving across the country or around your home state, there are some precautions to keep in mind.
Road Trip Safety During a Pandemic
- Pack hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and extra face masks.
- Call ahead to verify hotel, campsite, and attraction reservations (many zoos, museums, theme parks, and other attractions require tickets to be purchased ahead of time).
- Most states require face masks to be worn in public places.
- Wash hands before and after pumping gas, using restrooms, and dining in restaurants.
- Be aware that some fast-food restaurants are only accessible through the drive-through, so you may not be able to use restrooms there.
- Pack extra water and snacks so you don’t have to stop as often.
- When traveling out of state, check each state for any regulations regarding quarantining.
